Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must be Australian citizens for all categories except the ‘Award for Active Citizenship’.

Self nominations will not be accepted.

Nominees must be at least 16 years of age in the year of the Award presentation.

Nominees for the category of Young Citizen of the Year must be 30 years of age or less on 26 January in the year of the Award presentation.

Sitting state and federal politicians, current vice-regal officers and elected members of council are not eligible.

Retired politicians, elected members and vice-regal officers will be considered for work undertaken in addition to their official duties.

Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in subsequent years.

Groups of people, organisations or couples will not normally be eligible for Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year, though in exceptional cases the selection panels reserve the right to consider such nominations.

Both individuals and organisations should be considered for the Community Event of the Year as this recognises the organising body or committee responsible for the event.

Absolutely no weight is given to the number of times a person or organisation is nominated.

Selection Criteria

Citizen & Young Citizen of the Year

There are no specific criteria to address, but nominees should have a broad involvement within the community – not be single-organisation focused. The following guidelines are designed to help nominators compile appropriate information to clearly aid the judging panel in its considerations:

  • Provide the best possible resumé covering all aspects of the person’s various involvements, listing the individual areas and/or roles in which the person has excelled.

  • How does the person stand out from others? How has their achievement/services been greater than what might be normally expected of a person their age and in their fields?

  • How has their involvement made Port Augusta a better place? How does the person make you proud to be part of the Port Augusta and broader Australian community?

  • What qualities make the person inspirational? Why should others look at them as a role model?

  • Has the person received other recognition through State, National or International Awards?

Community Event of the Year

The nomination should show, as examples, how the event:

  • Generates a high level of community involvement in its planning and staging, in association with an appropriate level of attendance numbers.

  • Generates positive publicity, and the amount, for Port Augusta both within and beyond the city.

  • Brings people to Port Augusta.

  • Value adds to Port Augusta through economic, lifestyle or community wellbeing.

  • Promotes community co-operation, understanding and goodwill.

Award for Active Citizenship

Active Citizenship can be as small as a campaign to clean up your street or as big as educating young people about democratic values, skills and participation.

The nomination should show, as examples, how the person or group:

  • Makes a significant contribution to the community.

  • Is an inspirational role model for the community or has demonstrated excellence in their field.

  • Is involved in the community and displays values such as respect, inclusion and helping others.

  • Demonstrates outstanding contribution and community service including areas such as; education, health, fund-raising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of the community.

Environmental Sustainability Award

The nomination should show, as examples, how the person or group:

  • Advocates for the sustainability and preservation of the environment.

  • Is involved in environmental projects, including initiatives such as Clean up Australia Day; and

  • Implements their own environmental initiatives.
